Free checklist · $59 at launch

A desktop app for Mac and Windows, working today and in private beta. Free checklist now; $59 for wait-list families during launch week, then $89, one time. No subscription, no account to create, and your plan never goes to DTR. It organizes your information; it isn't legal advice.

Type your name and open the vault to see what your family would find.

Leave your family a door that opens.

Most families never get the chance to sit down and plan for this, so when someone we love passes, the people left behind search for passwords, policies and paperwork during the hardest weeks of their lives. Family Unlocked is a gentle place to start: plan once, together, at your own pace, and give the people you love the peace of knowing where everything is.

How unlocked is your family?

  • Does someone besides you know where your will is?
  • Could your family get into your phone and email?
  • Is there one list of your bank, retirement and insurance accounts?
  • Do your accounts name a beneficiary?
  • Would your family know who to call first?

Your answers stay in this browser tab. Nothing is sent or saved.

  1. 1Answer a few questions. Your state, your household, what you own and who to call. About an hour.
  2. 2Close the gaps. A checklist shows what to fix and what to ask your attorney, then prints a packet for the meeting.
  3. 3Walk through it together. One evening, your spouse or grown children open "If something happens" and follow it.

5 steps left. About 40 minutes of work stands between you and a finished plan.

  1. 1Ask the bank about naming a beneficiary on the savings account. In one name with no beneficiary, it may need court (probate).
  2. 2Ask your attorney about a health-care directive.
  3. 3Name who can sign for the business.

The Johnson family is made up. Real plans are encrypted on your own computer. This organizes information; it is not legal advice.

What's inside

One place for everything they'll need.

Two modes

Planning mode for the two of you now. "If something happens" mode for your spouse or children later.

A readiness score

Every asset is tagged by how it is set up to pass. One number shows how organized your plan is, and what to ask your attorney or bank next.

State rules, in plain language

Probate limits, transfer-on-death deeds and more, explained and dated. Virginia is available in the beta and hasn't yet been reviewed by an attorney; we're adding other states one at a time and list each one here when it's finished. Before DTR sells Family Unlocked for a state, an attorney licensed there reviews its summary.

A step-by-step guide

From the first 48 hours to the first year: who to call, which bills to keep paying, what to ask the attorney before paying a debt, and letters for banks and employers filled in from your plan.

A printed key they can use

You print one recovery sheet and keep it with your will. It opens the plan without you, a company or a password reset. The app reminds you who to tell.

Your business, covered

Own a business? One section holds who to call, where the books are and who has authority.

Locked like a bank vault. Opened like a front door.

Your plan is protected with AES-256 encryption, the same standard banks use, and it stays on your own computer. DTR never sees your plan, so we can't lose it or sell it.

Why this exists

I built this for my wife and our family first.

I wanted to be sure that if something happened to me, my wife and our family would never have to sort through accounts, paperwork and passwords while they grieve.

So I built them a plan: every account, every document, every wish, and a step-by-step guide for the days after. So they won't have to guess. Family Unlocked is that same plan, made for your family.

Your license key arrives by email from DTR Operations Group LLC. Install the app; after setup it shows the License Agreement and asks for the key. Beta keys are yours to keep under that agreement.

On Windows: the beta installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows says "Unknown publisher" when you run it. That's expected for now; choose More info › Run anyway. Signing comes before sales open.

Mac: Intel or Apple silicon, macOS 12 or later; signed and notarized by Apple. Windows 10 or 11: the beta installer is not yet signed, so Windows says "Unknown publisher"; choose Run (or More info › Run anyway). Not invited yet? Questions

Is this legal advice?

No. Family Unlocked organizes your information and explains common rules in plain language. Your will, trust and powers of attorney should be drafted by an attorney. The app prints a list of questions to take to your attorney.

What if I forget the passphrase?

The printed recovery key opens the plan and lets you set a new passphrase. If both are lost, nobody can open it, including us. That's what real encryption means.

What if my computer breaks?

Keep a backup. In Backup & settings, "Export everything" saves your plan and your scanned documents together in one file; put it on a USB drive or another safe place. (The app's daily backups cover the plan but not the scans.) On your new computer, install Family Unlocked and choose "Open an export instead" on its first screen, then pick your file and enter your passphrase or recovery key. Your plan and scans come back as they were. The recovery key unlocks a copy of your plan, but it can't bring back a file that was never backed up, so the copy matters.

What if DTR Operations Group LLC goes away?

DTR closing doesn't switch anything off. Your plan lives on your computer, not on our servers, so it opens with or without us, and it prints to paper anytime. Your license is checked on your computer, never by us. As with any app, it needs a computer that still runs it, your files, and your passphrase or recovery key.

Does my plan go to the cloud?

Not to DTR. Your plan never goes to DTR or any DTR server. If your computer already copies its Documents folder to iCloud or OneDrive, the plan file goes along with it, still encrypted. You can keep your plan in a folder that stays on your computer, in Backup & settings.

How does the license key work?

Your key arrives by email. You enter it once, after setup, and the app checks it on your computer. Nothing is sent to DTR and there is no account to sign in to. The key is then saved inside your plan, so when you open a backed-up copy of your plan on a new computer, its license comes with it. It has no expiration date, and one key covers every computer in your household. Each computer keeps its own copy of the plan; copies don't update each other on their own.

Can I share my key?

Within your household, yes; that's what it's for. Please don't share it beyond that. Each key shows your family's name in the app. DTR switches a key off only if it's posted or shared outside your household, if the purchase is refunded or charged back, or if we issued it by mistake (if the mistake wasn't yours, we send a replacement), and only in a later update. Your plan is never deleted: the "If something happens" guide still opens, and you can always export a complete copy. The License Agreement has the details.

What if I lose my license key?

You usually won't need it again, because it's saved inside your plan. If you do, reply to the email it came in, or write to us at dtroperationsgroup@gmail.com, and we'll send it again.

Can I use it on my phone?

The full plan runs on Mac and Windows computers. A companion app for iPhone and Android is planned, so your emergency guide and key contacts go where you go. We'll post its timing on this page.

Why one-time and not a subscription?

Because the day your family needs this is not the day a subscription should lapse.

I own a small business. Does it cover that?

Yes, the essentials: who to call, where the books and bank accounts are, key contacts and who has authority. It's built for families, with a section for the business so often at the center of one.
